Leptospirosis, also known as Weil\u2019s disease, is an infection caused by bacteria named Leptospira sp.<\/em> , which can infect both humans and animals. The disease is often found in tropical areas, particularly in areas with bad sanitation or a tendency of flooding. A lecturer from the Medicine Faculty at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus<\/a>), dr. Cynthia Arsita, M. Biomed, explained the danger of leptospirosis, its symptoms, and how to prevent it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Cynthia highlighted that leptospirosis was a zoonosis disease that could be spread from animals to humans. The bacteria usually spread through water and soils, contaminated by animals\u2019 urine, including dogs and rats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disasters like flooding open a wide possibility of the spread of leptospirosis infection. This disease is marked by various symptoms, ranging from minor to major. During its early stage or anicteric, patients will experience a heavy fever, headache, muscle sore within the calf area, and eye irritation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf it isn\u2019t treated well, the symptoms will grow even more severe, like icterus, kidney diseases, and respiratory failures,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The major stage of the symptoms, better known as Weil\u2019s Disease<\/em>, can potentially cause serious complications within one\u2019s body, including bleeding, kidney failure, and respiratory issues. On a certain condition, the disease can also be fatal, particularly for an individual with a low immune system. Dr. Cynthia continued that prevention was an initial step to reduce leptospirosis cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAvoid any contact with polluted water, wear protective clothes in muddy areas, like boots, and ensure that your food is free from any contact with rodents,\u201d she uttered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doctor Cynthia also emphasized the importance of shutting off any form of wounds from any direct contact. This is because Leptospira<\/em> bacteria can infiltrate our body through even a small wound. In addition, she also advised the general public to always prioritize sanitation of one\u2019s own body, particularly after working outside. Thus, they can prevent themselves from Leptospirosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t forget to immediately contact doctors if you experience any symptoms of Leptospirosis. Early checkups can potentially prevent one from any complications. Normally, doctors will also give antibiotics, such as doxycycline or penicillin to handle the infection. With proper prevention, we can protect ourselves and our families from this disease,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
