FOSTI UMS VISITED DOSCOM UDINUS TO DISCUSS OPEN SOURCE
Student Activity Unit of Open Source Forum of Informatics Engineering (Fosti) visited Student Activity Unit of Dinus Open Source Community (Doscom) Dian Nuswantoro University (Udinus). Fosti is a Student Activity Unit which deals in the Open Source field at Muhammadiyah University Surakarta.
Those students in that kind of Student Activity Unit are those who realize the importance of reducing and minimizing the use of illegal software in Indonesia. Business Software Alliance (BSA) survey’s confirmed that in 2015, 39% of software installed on computers worldwide was not properly licensed. While in Indonesia, 84% computers used illegal software. This number triggered the community of open source activists to reduce it.
The visitation was wrapped in the form of comparative study. They discussed about some major issues in both of the internal organization such as work programs, memberships, income of funds and many others. The two Student Activity Units also discussed about how to persuade unlicensed software users to start to use open source based software. "Open source is the concept of sharing, so we are actively sharing knowledge about open source to members" said the chairman of Doscom, Ahmad Basir on the discussion. The event was conducted on Monday 11th of December 2017, in the meeting room, on the 1st floor of H building, Udinus.
One of Doscom's work programs to attract people to use open source from inside and outside Udinus was Software Freedom Day (SFD). "We will held open source app exhibitions and open source workshops" explains Reno Kurnia Ramadhan one of Doscom's active members. As we know, there are some open source applications that can be used to support daily work activity such as Godot engine a game maker applications, Blender a 3D animation applications, Inkscape a vector-based graphics applications, Libre Office, and Mozilla firefox.
