In addition to improving the quality of education, Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) also encouraged a sense of social and environmental responsibility in their new students. It was achieved through a community service event involving 3,517 new students on Wednesday, September 6th, 2023.
The social service activity was a part of the second day of the Dinus Inside 2023 event. Around 1,000 grocery packages were donated to the underprivileged community and even several orphanages across Semarang City.
Adi Prihandono, M.Kom., one of the coordinators of Dinus Inside Social Service 2023, reported that the grocery packages were directly gathered by the new students of the 2023/2024 cohort. The packages were filled with 1kg of rice, 1/2 kg of sugar, 220 ml of vegetable oil, 1 box of tea bags, and instant noodles. All of them were distributed to several sub-districts, such as Genuk, East Semarang, Mranggen, and Tembalang.
“Other than that, we also donated to 15 orphanages across the Semarang area. We not only organized direct donations by our first-year students but also came together in prayer for the underprivileged community as well as for the continuity of the current ongoing freshmen studies," explained Adi.
The new students also extended their generosity to the neighboring community around the campus. The handover was symbolized by the inauguration of student organizations and unit expos held on the volleyball court at Udinus. The donations were presented directly to the chief of Pendrikan Kidul, located in the Central Semarang Region within Semarang City.
Dr. Guruh Fajar Shidik, S.Kom., M.Cs., the Vice-Chancellor II General Affairs and Finance of Udinus, said that those activities aimed to grow students’ empathy and sympathy toward other people and their surroundings. Dr. Guruh also hoped that the first-year students could implement more acts of kindness in the future.
“We hope that the donation will be received positively and inspire our students to engage in positive actions. Before this social service, we also undertook several activities such as planting mangrove seedlings at Mangunharjo Region and releasing fish fry at Jatibarang Reservoir,” said Dr. Guruh.
