The Engineering Faculty at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) invented a talking stethoscope. That device was built by four students with three faculty members assisting them.

Those four students formed a development team named Imerus, consisting of Atsal Chandra Cahya Putra, Andri Maulana, Nimas Maharani, and Tata Atma Tiara. They were mainly instructed by three lecturers, namely Sari Ayu Wulandari, S.T., M.Eng., Dr. dr. Listya Tresnanti Mirtha, Sp.KO., Subsp.APK(K)., and Eric Daniel Tenda, DIC., Ph.D., SpPD., FINASIM. The talking stethoscope underwent the development process from January to July 2023.

One of those students, Nimas Maharani, stated that the talking stethoscope aimed to synchronize the perception of general practitioners to that of medical specialists, which would later reduce the number of patients referred and may cause an increase in health insurance costs. The talking stethoscope itself is a stethoscope equipped with the capability of interpreting pre-diagnoses using auscultation wave statistics.

“The talking stethoscope is connected to an audio cable attached to the patient. In addition to that, there is also a monitor used to indicate vital sign variables and the results of pre-diagnoses,” she explained.

The development team conducted an experiment in the Instrumentation lab on campus, starting with a literature review, designing process, building stage, and testing procedure.

Meanwhile, Sari Ayu Wulandari, S.T., M.Eng., revealed that the talking stethoscope was an innovation with many advantages, including detecting any kind of sound component, and it could also expose the sound intensity of each sound and determine which one has the highest frequency between every sound recorded.

“Hopefully, this talking stethoscope of ours could assist doctors in conducting pre-diagnoses and comparing the results with manual diagnoses,” she concluded. (Humas Udinus/Alex. Foto: Dok. Tim Imerus)
