IN AN ATTEMPT TO EMPOWER THE LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES, THE STUDENTS IN THE ENGINEERING FACULTY AT UDINUS INVENTED A DEVICE TO AUTOMATICALLY CUT BANANA LEAVES

Students and faculty members of the Engineering Faculty at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) successfully developed a device known as the Adjustable Multi-layered Banana Leaves Cutter. The device is capable of cutting fifteen banana leaves at once and shaping the leaves to our heart's content. Adjustable Multi-layered Banana Leaves Cutter . The Adjustable Multi-layered Banana Leaves Cutter was developed by three faculty members of the Engineering Faculty alongside three students of the Department of Industrial Engineering. The development process was spearheaded by Ir. Pramudi Arsiwi, S.T., M.Sc, IPM., Asean Eng., alongside two faculty members, namely Ir. Amalia M.T., IPM., Asean Eng., and Dr. Rindra Yusianto S.Kom., M.T. There are also three students involved, including Widi Burhanudin Fallah, Devina Chalifatun Nisa, and Naswa Sabila Ulhaq.

During an interview with Ir. Pramudi Arsiwi, S.T., M.Sc., IPM., Asean Eng., regarding the Adjustable Multi-layered Banana Leaves Cutter , he stated that the Adjustable Multi-layered Banana Leaves Cutter was invented to help small business owners cut banana leaves, which could be used as a form of food packaging. Currently, many small businesses use banana leaves to pack foods as it is an eco-friendly alternative with more hygienic.

“By using Adjustable Multi-layered Banana Leaves Cutter , they will be able to cut more than fifteen banana leaves simultaneously. In addition to this capability, the cut will also be more precise compared to using conventional methods. We have tested this device, and it will later be mass-distributed upon being patented,” he explained.

Arsiwi added that students were also involved in the brainstorming, development, and testing processes of the device. The invention of this Leaf-cutting Device is part of a bigger program known as Independent Campus, which would later be converted into a form of credit hours.

Obviously, the converted credit hours will only be valid for courses concerning packaging, production, and quality control,” he added.

During the development process, the Adjustable Multi-layered Banana Leaves Cutter utilized steel plates as the raw material for the main framework, and there were also four legs whose heights were adjustable. Meanwhile, the cutter itself used stainless steel as its material with the pressing tool made of metal. A wooden cutting pad was also included in the Leaf-cutting Device.

Widi Burhanudin Fallah, one of the students involved in the project, claimed to be glad for his participation in the project, which would later benefit the public. Widi also hoped various small business owners to directly use this creation of his and his team.

“This device will help small business owners. Honestly, I could not be happier to contribute to a project that would benefit our local small businesses,” he concluded. (Humas Udinus/Alex. Foto: Dok. FT Udinus)
