Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) through its Japanese Literature Department was once again trusted as the host of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). The test, which was a collaboration between Udinus and the Japan Foundation, was open to domestic and international students and the public. It took place on Saturday, December 1st, 2024.

The Japanese Literature Department, which was a department in the Humanities Faculty at Udinus, has indeed been a host of JLPT several times. The test was taken by 2,500 students from various regions in Indonesia. This number broke the records, as previously, the JLPT at Udinus had never received this many participants. For that reason, on this specific occasion, the test did not only take place on campus but also nearest private high schools.

Dr. Bayu Aryanto, S.S., M.Hum., the Head of the Japanese Literature Department, explained that Udinus had become the host of JLPT since 2017. The test is normally hosted in July and December. Similar to previous years, the test offered five different levels.

“Participants can choose one of the five levels, from N5 to N1, with N5 being the easiest and N1 being the most difficult. This test aimed to measure their Japanese proficiency, which will be necessary to carve a future in Japan,” he revealed.

Dr. Akhmad Saifudin, M.Si., the Chief of the 2024 December JLPT Committee, added that N5 was the easiest, and N1 was the most difficult. Passing the N1 test, which is the highest level, implies that the participant is competent in reading Japanese newspapers.

“JLPT is a certification test hosted with direct involvement from the Japanese government through an agency called The Japan Foundation. The test is hosted simultaneously globally. As for the JLPT at Udinus, the whole test ran well without any major technical issues,” he concluded. (Humas Udinus/Haris. Foto: Humas Udinus)
