In an attempt to introduce Indonesian cultures to international circles, a lecturer from the Department of Japanese Literature at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus), Sri Oemiati, M.Hum., has conducted a visiting lecture in Thailand. The lecture aimed to teach students how to speak and write Japanese properly.
During her service, Sri Oemiati taught at two institutions in Thailand, including Thaksin University and Hat Yai Witthayalai School 2. The community service program lasted from February 1 to 4, 2025. It also served as a way to deepen the bonds between those two institutions and Udinus.
Sri Oemiati explained that the visiting lecture also aimed to improve her teaching skills, particularly to Japanese Literature students of different backgrounds. The main focus of the lecture was learning Japanese and Indonesian cultures.
“We taught them Indonesian culture in Japanese of intermediate level. Students were seen enthusiastically following the lesson, with some of them even wanting to participate in a student exchange program with Udinus,” she added.
At Thaksin University, Sri Oemiati taught sixty sophomore students. In addition, a lecturer from the university, Mr. Chayot, was also there alongside Sri Oemiati. She revealed that the visiting lecture was her first and valuable experience of teaching students from foreign countries.
Meanwhile, Sri Oemiati also taught at Hat Yai Witthayalai School 2, with 14 ten graders and seven twelve graders participating her class. Similar to students at Thaksin University, here, the students were also enthusiastic in her class. On that occasion, Sri Oemiati taught students about preparations for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test of the N5 level.
“I also taught them Indonesian cultural heritages, including traditional dances, musical instruments, and tourist attractions, like the Komodo Island. I can see that students are interested in the uniqueness of Indonesian culture,” Sri Oemiati uttered.
Through this service, there would be a partnership and research between Udinus and Thaksin University. Sri Oemiati stated that academicians from Thaksin University are looking forward to conducting this collaboration and research. (Humas Udinus/Alex. Foto: Humas Udinus)
