A total of 36 junior students of the Humanities Faculty at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus). The plays served as term projects of the English Drama course. The event showcased two different plays, namely, Epiphyte and Vengeance of Greed.
The plays featured students as actors, and the event was hosted for two days, from January 15 to 16, 2025. It took place on the third floor of the E building. The English Drama course specifically aimed to give English students at Udinus a brand-new practical experience, not only in hosting a play but also in organizing.
Everyone played their own parts, including actors or actresses, directors, musicians, wardrobe, public relations, and lighting technicians. During the play, all actors and actresses were obliged to communicate their dialogues in English.
One of those two plays was entitled Epiphyte, directed by Aulia Rahma Syahrani S. She explained that the title of the play was inspired by the name of parasites dwelling on a tree. In the context of the play, epiphyte here refers to a metaphor, depicting the deep meaning of human existence.
According to Aulia, this play not only touches the audience’s emotions but also takes a deep dive into the consequence of unrestrained ambitions. It tells the story of Willy Loman, a protagonist with big ambitions to achieve success.
“However, along the way, Willy must face family tragedies, huge sacrifices, and the undoing of his dreams. This story tells us to balance both our ambitions and personal lives,” she added.
The Epiphyte play on January 15, 2025, will be followed by another play entitled Vengeance of Greed on the next day. These two plays showcase students’ creativity in developing certain themes into intriguing and meaningful stories. (Humas Udinus/Alex. Foto: Humas Udinus)
