Having knowledge about copyrights is essential for students in defending their countless innovations against cheating and plagiarism. Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) collaborates with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property Rights (DJKI) from the Central Authority Ministry of Law and Human Rights of The Republic of Indonesia to share their insights with the students.
Hosted by the Center for Research and Community Service (CRCS) at Udinus, this event featured two expert speakers namely Stevanus Rionaldo, S.S., an Intellectual Property Analyst of DJKI, and Dewa Ayu Trisna Dewi, S.H., First Legal Expert Analyst of DJKI. Organized as a seminar, the event was successfully conducted, and attended by 250 participants including students and lecturers at Udinus.
Kuswardhanti Ariwati Rahayu, S.Sos., M.Si., Acting Application and Publication Coordinator, delivered a speech during the event. She mentioned that those esteemed guests are well-acquainted with the theme of ‘Supporting creator’s innovation and creativity with copyright registration.’ She emphasized how important Copyrights is, especially in the creative industrial world that covers service and product.
“This seminar represents our commitment to bolster student engagement in the protection of copyrights. Why? Because, copyrights can be the best weapon to fight against cheating, particularly for business that has a high competition in the Indonesian Market,” she stated.
As the Intellectual Property Analyst of DJKI, Stevanus Rionaldo, S.S., explained the definition and basic principles of copyright. Copyright is an exclusive right owned by the creator of certain work, which consists of moral rights and economic rights. Moral right is a person's right to include their name and change their work.
“Meanwhile, to get the economic value, the copyright owner has to have an economic right to get the economic benefit over their creation. Someone will have the original copyright if that person creates something on his own or the copyright will appear automatically as soon as the creation is published, “ said Stevanus.
Under the guidance of Juli Ratnawati S.E., M.Si., the head of Intellectual Rights at LPPM Udinus, the event was filled with enthusiasm, which could be seen through numerous questions asked by the participants. Additional activities such as mini quiz games about basic intellectual rights made the seminar even more engaging.
Dr. Eng Yuliman Purwanto, M. Eng., the head of the Center for Research and Community Service (CRCS), emphasized that the seminar presents a big opportunity for students to enhance their understanding and knowledge of copyright protection and how to secure it.
“Udinus, a well-known campus for its diverse study programs in the field of information technology and communication would be very vulnerable to copyright issues because it is easier to copy and share through the internet. We hope that students will respect people’s rights and avoid any activity that is against the law,” he concluded. (Udinus Public Relation/ Haris. Photo: Udinus PR)
