On November 18th, 2023, The Gita Dian Nuswa Choir Group from Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) successfully clinched the gold medal at the 2023 Karangturi International Choir Competition (KICC) in the Mixed Voice Category.

The competition was hosted by the YPN Karangturi at Liem Liang Peng Hall, Tugu Subdistrict, Semarang. At the competition, roughly 58 teams from many different choir institutions in Indonesia participated to grasp their hands on the gold medal. Additionally, the event organizers reported that the financial problems they encountered caused no foreign team to participate in the competition.

Lenni Yovita, S.E., M.Si., a faculty member, uttered that the Gita Dian Nuswa Choir Group emerged as the winner with a total of 80,23 points. On the same occasion, she also expressed her utmost pride for the accomplishment achieved by all 38 members of the said choir group. As a further note, this accomplishment would not have been possible had the team not trained tirelessly for the last two months. Through this success, those students were bestowed with scholarships.

“Congratulations to all students who have made it. It is indeed a huge token of pride to be able to achieve a gold medal. Hopefully, this success could motivate the Dian Nuswa Choir Group to become even more successful in the upcoming competitions,” Lenni hoped.

In the Mixed Voice Category, the Dian Nuswa Choir Group presented three songs, including Salutaris Hostia by Gioachino Rossini, Exultate by Budi Susanto Yohanes, and Catante Domino by Rangga Aristo Kulas. Dennis Adiwinata Irwan Soeroso, the Head Executive of the Gita Dian Nuswa Choir Group, explained that the song choice was customized according to the contest category.

“We would like to improve the quality of our voice, and those three songs need the classical singing technique,” he uttered.

Obstacles Did Not Tackle Them

Dennis shared that the preparation took two months. In those two months, the choir team underwent constant training on working days, even sometimes on Saturdays, supervised by their coach, Alfonso Andika Wiratma. Commonly, the training lasted for four hours from 5 p.m. until finish. There was, however, a restriction the team had to undertake before the team could compete, namely drinking cold beverages.

“To maintain our voices, we are not allowed to drink ice for two months, and that was the most difficult part for me, considering there has been excessive heat here in Semarang,” Dennis added.
