Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) provided a platform for junior chess players from the whole nation to hone their chess skills. Unlike previous years, the 2024 Dinus Chess Competition was only aimed at elementary to high school students.
The chess competition was initiated by the Chess unit at Udinus. Evi Juli Ana, the head of the committee, explained that this event implemented the speed chess system. The system allowed the players to play the game seven times to gather points. The player with the highest points would later emerge as the champion.
“The winning player will get a point, and a half point would be rewarded to both players if the match were to end draw. The losing player will not gain a point. As for the levels, we divided them into three, namely, Elementary, Junior High, and High Schools,” she explained.
“In the previous year, the event featured national player, including International Players and Grand Masters. For this year, we would like to focus on facilitation young chess players and providing them scholarships,” Evi added.
Garnering the Immense Potential of Young Chess Athletes
On that occasion, the competition was officially opened by the symbolic gong sounded by Dr. Kusni Ingsih, M.M. (the Vice Chancellor III of Student Affairs). Featuring Didik Wahyu Sakti Aji (the Head of Chess Association of Semarang) as the judge, this competition was witnessed by 67 participants in the auditorium located on the third floor of the E building on Sunday, January 21st, 2023.
During her greetings, Dr. Kusni stated that this event was hosted in an attempt to find new young chess players with immense potential. Through these athletes, Indonesia, particularly Central Java, will have more athletes to reinforce existing athletes in making a name for the said contingent.
“We provide these scholarships to appreciate young chess players for their talents. In addition, Udinus will always support these athletes to garner accomplishments and make a name for our contingent and Indonesia,” she hoped.
As stated before, this competition was part of a bigger event, namely, the 2024 Dinusfest. The 2024 Dinusfest itself showcases dozens of contests in different fields, including arts, sports, and technology. In addition to contests, the 2024 Dinusfest also features several webinars and expos organized by Udinus.
The competition is available not only for students but there are dozens of other contests for college students and the general public. In total, 36 competitions are opened which will run for more than 2 weeks, starting from January 20 until the upcoming February 5, 2024. High school students who seek additional information about the 2024 Dinusfest activities can browse through the official website on https://festival.dinus.ac.id/. (Humas Udinus/Haris. Foto: Dok.
