Being proficient in Expressing Kanji Characters, an Undergraduate Student in the Japanese Literature Program at Udinus Won a Championship

Developing the interests and talents of its students, the Faculty of Humanities (FIB) of Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) made an achievement at the Shoudou Shodou event where artworks that express kanji characters were contested. The achievement at the national event was earned by students from the Bachelor of Japanese Literature Program.

She is a student named Jihan Hanifah and she earned the attainment near the end of the year 2023. Jihan defeated dozens of participants from various universities in Indonesia. The competition hosted by Isshoni Tanoshimimashou (IT) of Universitas Brawijaya was held online.

Japanese calligraphy or Shoudouin Japanese is artistic writing derived from Japanese characters or letters. This artwork has techniques and principles similar to Chinese calligraphy. In the present time, Japanese calligraphy has developed and become a means of learning.

The students who are commonly known as Jihan explained that in Shoudou category, participants were obliged to handwrite as well as express Kanji characters with a brush on paper. She revealed, that prior to competing in the event, she had been training routinely to create meaningful artwork.

"It's such a prideful moment to be the winner in Shoudoucategory. I had no difficulties when participating in the event, I just felt a little nervous. Everything can be solved and I was able to create artworks that make proud of Udinus," explained Jihan.

The Head of the Udinus Japanese Literature Program, Dr. Bayu Aryanto, SS, M.Hum., felt proud of the achievements of one of his students. He stated that through competing in various events, students can hone their skills and gain valuable experience.
