Communication Science Students – Syahda Anindya Putri

Participating in the preservation of batik has always been a responsibility for Syahda Anindya Putri, a Communication Science Student at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus). She preserves this cultural heritage through her batik business, namely, Batik Temawon, which has been managed by Syahda and her parents since 2013.

In her business, Syahda markets the products and serves as a model for the catalog. She is also responsible for establishing relations among youths and her fellow students, so her products can be more known.

“This Batik Temawon business gradually develops over time, as it started as a business only involving a mere distribution of products from suppliers. However, now, the batik products in our business feature batik sketches designed by my mother,” she revealed.

In addition to mere clothes, her business also now offers blouses, shirts, dresses, robes, scarves, and tote bags. These varieties of products are a form of innovation to attract more customers, particularly youth.

“As far as I can observe, youths’ began to take more interest in batik. They tend to like batik on their wardrobes, including blazers, obi belts, and skirts. Currently, it has become a trend where youths would combine batik with something casual. For example, I see them combining skirts made of batik cloth with leather jackets,” Syahda, born in 2004, explained.

Implementing Knowledge From Her Studies

Syahda, a junior student, stated that she had applied many things from her studies to her business, particularly Public Speaking . She occasionally uses her speaking skills to properly communicate with customers.

“I also implement service excellence in my business, as it involves how to properly face customers of different backgrounds, so they can be satisfied with our services. It is also natural for me to apply marketing communication in marketing our products and brands,” she explained.

On campus, Syahda is also active in student organizations, namely, the Communication Science Student Association. Through this organization, Syahda has the means to hone her soft skills and market her business through sponsorship at the event hosted by the organization.

In the future, she aims to study Batik Temawon, her business, for her thesis to introduce and expand its market reach.

“After my graduation, I would like to further develop this family business with many more innovations. For those who invest your time in your studies, don’t forget that parents will always do their best for us. Successes are not only defined by our academic accomplishments but also by how we appreciate and reciprocate our parents’ love. Keep doing your best and don’t forget to show the results of your studies to them,” she concluded.

In addition to managing her business, Syahda has also collaborated as a model for various models, including for flyers and commercials for Susan Salon & Spa Semarang, as well as product photos for CanWrong T-Shirt, Margaria Batik, and Al-Fath. (Humas Udinus/Ika. Foto: Dok. Pribadi)
