An innovation invented by students from Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) entitled GluKol Check is a device used to measure blood sugar and cholesterol without involving any invasive means. The device does not involve any form of injection and is now capable of detecting heartbeats and oxygen levels in the blood.

The device was designed by two Biomedical Engineering students, and the idea of it was first proposed in the Student Creativity Program (PKM) in 2024. Those two students were Adinda Ba Martiza Abhiesa Al Zahwa, the designer of electrical components, and Kalista Birna Murni, the designer of its algorithm.

Adinda explained that their innovation could replace injections, as it was designed based on the principle of Photoplethysmography (PPG), which utilizes infrared. GluKol Check can measure the fluctuation of blood volume and the changes in light absorbed by the blood.

“This device doesn’t use any form of injection, so patients can use it more routinely to check their blood. This device was created to make the process of checking blood sugar and cholesterol more convenient,” she stated on Saturday, February 1, 2025.

Adinda claimed that there several issues in designing GluKol Check. These issues encompassed designing the body cover to maintain the device’s portability, as it could provide a sense of convenience to the patients. As for the usage, it works fairly simply, by only pressing the power switch and aiming the device at the patient.

“Despite being much simpler, its measurement isn’t that far off from the conventional methods. Many medical professionals even use our device to monitor the results in real-time. As far as things go, our device has garnered enthusiasm from the public, and it motivates us to further develop GluKol Check,” she uttered.

Serving as a Final Project

Meanwhile, Kalista added that the project received funding from the Student Creativity Program 2024, and it would be further enhanced for the products of their final projects. She also admitted that the development was based on criticism from the reviewers in the Student Creativity Program, faculty members, and the general public.

“Hopefully, our innovation can serve as a main solution for patients who need to check their blood sugar and cholesterol routinely. This device can also be beneficial for those who want to check their heartbeats and oxygen levels within their blood to prevent diseases early,” she concluded. (Humas Udinus/Haris. Foto: Dok. Pribadi)
