Four Computer Science Lecturers at Udinus Earned Their Doctoral Degrees: A Step Toward an Improvement of Higher Education Quality

Four of them had finished their doctoral studies in the Department of Electrical and Informatics Studies at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya. They were lecturers from various departments at Udinus, including Dr. Edy Mulyanto. S.Si., M.Kom.—from the Informatics Department, Dr. Sugiyanto, M.Kom.—from the Visual Communication Design Department, as well as two lecturers from the Information System Department, namely, Dr. Amiq Fahmi, S.Kom., and Dr. M.Y. Teguh Sulistyono, M.Kom.

Dr. Edy Mulyanto earned his doctoral degree through his dissertation entitled ‘The Classification of Indonesian Dancing Videos using a Method Based on Tubelet Embedding Method.’ This research focuses on the development of an automatic classification method to identify Indonesian traditional dances, including Tari Gambyong, Saman, Pende, Barong, Merak, and Topeng.

“This research employs a technology known as deep learning based on transformers , with the aim to support the learning process of local culture preservation. Hopefully, the young generation or the international community could learn Indonesian culture only by using their digital devices,” revealed Dr. Edy, who was also the Head of the Informatics Department at Udinus.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sugiyanto achieved his doctoral degree through his dissertation entitled ‘Multimodal-based Depression Detection Using Cnn-WoPL.’ Through this research, detecting depression can be conducted objectively using a more automatic and quicker approach. With this method, depression can be detected through the intensity of the Action Unit and Eye Gaze on facial expressions.

“This method is proven to have the potential to help medical professionals objectively diagnose depression in patients. Hopefully, this can potentially reduce the prevalence of depression among the general public,” explained Dr. Sugiyanto, who was also the Head of the Visual Communication Design Department at Udinus.

Meanwhile, Dr. Amiq in his research has successfully developed a smart classification method to diagnose dengue fever accurately during its initial stage. The research was written in the form of a dissertation entitled ‘The Classification of Dengue Fever Based on Clinical Diagnosis Criteria Feature Using the IsFLOF Ensemble Outlier Detection and Multiclass Imbalance Resampling.’

“Through this research, I have improved the accuracy of diagnosis by utilizing outlier detection techniques and multiclass weighting. Hopefully, this method can help medical professionals in making decisions more precisely and quickly,” Dr. Amiq, who was also the Head of the Information Systems Department at Udinus.

As for Dr. Teguh, he earned his doctoral degree through his dissertation entitled ‘The Classification of the Severity of Stroke Based on EEG Signal Using Domains like Time, Frequency, and Signal Decomposition.’ In his research, he employed an innovative approach to overseeing patients’ conditions by analyzing brain wave activity thoroughly.

“This research used the EEG signal to classify the severity of stroke objectively. Thus, patients could get the proper medical treatment, including therapy, evaluation, and rehabilitation,” he explained.

The Dean of the Computer Science Faculty at Udinus, Sri Winarni, M.Kom., Ph.D., expressed her pride and appreciation for the achievement attained by those four lecturers. She hoped that his accomplishment could serve as a tangible commitment of the Computer Science Faculty to improving the HR quality in the field of information and computer technology.

“Hasil penelitian para dosen ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi di ranah akademik melalui transfer pengetahuan kepada mahasiswa Udinus. Selain itu, semoga hasil penelitian tersebut mampu memberikan dampak nyata bagi masyarakat luas,” pungkasnya. (Humas Udinus/Penulis: Haris. Foto: Dok. Humas FIK Udinus)
