The Health Science Faculty at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) taught its students about electrical safety. The commitment came in the form of an electrical seminar hosted by the Occupational Health and Safety Forum (OHSF) at Udinus, involving the distributor division from the National Electricity Company of Central Java and Yogyakarta, on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
On that occasion, the Head of the Public Health Department at Udinus, Dr. Eti Rimawati, S.K.M., M.Kes, was present. She was accompanied by the coordinator of the Occupational Health and Safety Study Concentration at Udinus, Izzatul Alifah Sifai, S.K.M., M.P.H., and other lecturers, including Bayu Yonu Setyo Nugroho, M.P.H., and Ratih Pramitasari, S.K.M., M.P.H.
During her opening speech, Eti Rimawati mentioned that the seminar was themed ‘Electrical OHS Seminar.’ This specific theme was chosen, as it was relevant to discuss work safety with electrical systems and installations.
“This entails various procedures, including safe work, protection from electrical hazards, usage of self-protection tools, as well as an understanding of the risks and prevention of work accidents in the electrical sector,” she continued.
Additionally, Eti also explained that the seminar was attended by 163 participants, consisting of students from the Health Science Faculty. The seminar itself was particularly targeted at students who took the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) study concentration.
“With this seminar, students are given the picture of how the OHS in professional industries is implemented, specifically in the electrical sector. In addition, this is also a form of collaboration between the Public Health Department with the industry or practitioners, who facilitate students’ job readiness,” she explained.

Featuring Practitioners and the Industry
At the seminar, there were practitioners featured to discuss a topic, one of which is the Environmental OHS team from the Distribution Division of the National Electricity Company (PLN UP2D) of Central Java and Yogyakarta, Dedi Rustawan, S.T. At the discussion, he presented a topic about public electrical safety and PLN Mobile.
During his presentation, Dedi stated that the safe distance between trees and buildings from an electrical network was three meters. He also warned that there were several hazardous things one must not do, like burning things beneath an electrical network. Flames and burning materials can damage the network, potentially causing the conductor to get cut.
“This causes hazards in the surrounding area, and it could also potentially cause electrocution to the nearest living being beneath the electrical network. Moreover, don’t enter buildings or touch things with hazard or warning symbols on them, as they may hold electrical risks that can cause burns or even deaths,” he emphasized.
Dedi also exclaimed to keep an eye on electrical safety at home by not doing dangerous things, like plugging too many devices into an outlet, holding electronics with wet hands, and touching damaged wires.
Growing OHS Culter among Students
The Manager of PLN UP2D of Central Java and Yogyakarta, Munawir Hakim, S.T., M.M., QIA., QRMP.., appreciated the Health Science Faculty for holding the seminar. According to him, this was an excellent step to raise awareness among students toward the cruciality of OHS in the electrical sector, as it holds high risks. Additionally, the seminar also serves as a platform for students to grow the OHS culture from an earlier stage.
“This seminar can also bridge the academics to the industry, particularly the National Electricity Company, to create more competent, job-ready, and caring human resources,” he concluded. (Humas Udinus/Penulis: Ika. Editor: Haris. Foto: Humas FKes)
