THE ENGINEERING FACULTY AT UDINUS HELD A FORUM GROUP DISCUSSION CONCERNING GARBAGE PROBLEMS IN SEMARANG

The Engineering Faculty at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) hosted a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) introducing the idea of Garbage Data Management in Semarang. This discussion was a part of the Matching Fund Kedaireka Program. 

The FGD took place on the first floor of the I building at Udinus. It aimed to establish deeper collaborations with universities and industries. Roughly dozens of participants attended the discussion. 
 
At the discussion, the speakers presented learning materials about Garbage Data Management in Semarang. The discussion featured FX, Bambang Suranggono, S.Sos., (the Head of the Living Environment Service of Semarang) and Arwita Mawarti, S.T., M.T., (the Head of Division of Infrastructure Planning and Regional Development of Semarang). 
 
Dr. Ir. Dian Retno Sawitri, M.T., (the Kedaireka Team Leader of the Engineering Faculty) explained the idea of Planning Strategies, Controlling, and Reducing Wastes. In addition, she also revealed that only around nine percent of waste was recycled.
 
“Melalui diskusi ini kami ingin adanya kolaborasi antar perguruan tinggi dan industri maupun pemerintah untuk menanggulangi sampah khususnya di Kota Semarang. Berbagai hal telah didiskusikan di FGD ini,” jelasnya. 
 
Meanwhile, Arwita Mawarti, S.T., M.T., voiced her opinions concerning garbage management in Semarang. According to Arwita, development planning made the most contribution to managing the garbage. Arwita also showed the history of waste management in Semarang. It began with open dumping in 1991 and currently, the city employs the Garbage Conversion to Electric Energy (PSEL), which is considered eco-friendly. 
 
“Fenomena saat ini, dengan bertambahnya jumlah penduduk maka produk sampah meningkat. TPA sudah mulai overload, sesuai dengan data, 900 ton masuk ke TPA. Ditampilkan sepintas sejarah pengolalaan sampah di Semarang,” jelasnya.
 
Meanwhile, FX, Bambang Suranggono, S.Sos., explained that garbage banks involved many business owners. He also hoped for this garbage problem to see a resolution with the current advanced technology.
 
 “Dengan Bank sampah ini, kita untuk kedepannya dapat menghadirkan dan banyak bekerja sama dengan pelaku-pelaku usaha. Jadi, kita akan bekerja sama dengan pelaku-pelaku usaha yang lainnya. Harapan kita nanti teknologi di tahun 2024 kita bisa mengatasi sampah baru bisa dipilih menjadi listrik, serta sampah di sekitar 40 hektar,” harapnya. 
 
There were also two events following the discussion, namely, a workshop about a circular economy-based ERP app for industry. The workshop took place on Friday, September 23rd, 2022 after the FGD.
