The Health Science Faculty at Udinus Invited a Professor from TMU Taiwan, Prof. Shabbir: AI Is Important for Health Services!

Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus)—through its Health Science Faculty—held the ‘Guest Lecturer’ employing the theme ‘Artificial Intelligence in the Health Ecosystem. It was held on Saturday, May 8th, 2024. On that occasion, the event featured Prof. Dr. Shabir Syed-Abdul—a Graduate Institua at Taipei Medical University (TMU)—to share his knowledge about Artificial Intelligence and Digital Health Services.

The event was held in the conference room located on the first floor of the H building at Udinus. It was attended by dozens of faculty members and students. As stated by Enny Rachmani SKM., M.Kom., Ph.D., (the Dean of the Health Science Faculty), the event was divided into two sessions. The first session was exclusively aimed at faculty members of the Computer Science Faculty, the Medicine Faculty, and the Engineering Faculty. The second session was packaged as a public lecture aimed at students from various faculties.

During the opening speech, the dean explained that the theme was important for the current health sector. This is because the health sector has undergone major changes during the COVID-19 Pandemic. This major change pushes experts in the medical field to transform and keep up with technological advancements.

“There have been breakthroughs in the health field in various parts of the earth, including Taiwan. Thus, we can invite an expert from there to share his insight, allowing us to improve the health sector in Indonesia,” the dean revealed.

Furthermore, the participants included students and faculty members involved in health technology. “With this collaboration between faculties, our campus will be able to produce excellent innovations. The Role of AI for Health Services

Prof. Sabbir—an alumnus of Biomedical Informatics—currently focuses on implementing AI in Health Services. Upon the first session, Prof. Shabbir admired the innovative ideas conveyed by lecturers at Udinus.

“However, it is also important to understand that technologies in the health sector require several testing processes. This is done to get the license per the conditions, as the technology will eventually be adopted by the public. The technology will also directly affect one’s life and death,” he explained.

The professor also emphasized the importance of using computer advancements and Artificial Intelligence to improve health services. This specific step has been taken by various first-world countries, including the USA, Europe, and Japan.

“This digital health sector has also slowly been emerging since the end of the pandemic. This allows applications or devices to handle chronic disease and long-term needs to be made,” Prof. Shabbir uttered.

Prof. Shabbir also encouraged students to focus on useful and meaningful research. The research must benefit the public while also do not cost too much.
