Karate athletes at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) put 2024 to an end by garnering 17 medals. These medals were garnered at the Wira Tanggon Adhisatua (WTA) National Championship 2024, competed by 1,028 athletes on December 28, 2024.
Dozens of medals gathered by the Karate Unit consisted of 8 gold medals, 7 silver medals, and two bronze medals. The championship took place at the GRHA Instiper Sports Building, Yogyakarta. It was a championship for karate athletes to showcase their might and win trophies from the Ministry of Youth and Sports. On that occasion, karate athletes from Udinus competed against other athletes from 40 different contingents, including East Kalimantan, Bali, and West Nusa Tenggara.
Muhammad Wafi Rohman, the Chief of the Karate Unit, revealed that the athletes had been preparing for months, since September 2024. The unit normally conducted regular training three times a week. Following this regular training, the unit also enhanced its strategies and its athletes’ mentality a month before the championship.
“During that month, we trained five times a week, and there were two training sessions each day. The WTA Championship was also a platform for us to try our strength before competing at the upcoming 2025 Regional Sports Week,” Wafi explained.
Wafi added that he was proud of the accomplishments garnered by the Karate Unit at Udinus, as all the athletes competing for Udinus managed to garner medals. Six of these athletes are newcomers. The inclusion of these newcomer athletes will motivate other athletes at Udinus to be passionate about earning accomplishments.
“Our athletes have showcased their passion and motivations since the training sessions. Hopefully, the Karate Unit at Udinus will be able to earn more accomplishments to secure the highest level possible,” he emphasized.
On a different occasion, Dr. Rindra Yusianto, S.Kom., M.T., the Head of the Student Affairs Bureau at Udinus, also congratulated the athletes for their accomplishments at the national event. Hopefully, these successes could motivate the athletes to make a name for Udinsu at the upcoming National Sports Week.
“These medals show the commitment and dedication of our Karate Unit. Being able to compete against thousands of other national athletes was such a feat in itself,” Rindra concluded.
