Having an interest in the robotics sector, Sofiati Sholekah invented an Internet of Things-based salt water quality monitoring device. The device has been used by salt farmers in Pati, Central Java.

Sofiati explained that her invention functioned as a saltwater quality monitor through IOT. There 3 sub-systems planted inside the device including, a solar panel sub-system as an electrical resource, and the Baume meter measuring device digitalization sub-system as a device to measure the Baume scale.

“There is also an application sub-system used to check the monitoring results through a smartphone notification, resulting in the water quality being able to be monitored in real-time remotely,” she uttered.

In the construction process, Sofiati, an Undergraduate Electrical Engineering student of the 2018 cohort, completed the process in a group as a final assignment, also known as ‘Capstone Design’. She explained that by using the ‘Capstone Design’ method, students could finish their final assignments more easily.

“When I worked on the final assignment, I could share ideas with my group mates. Each member could focus on working on the part they are good at,” she uttered.

Sofiati admittedly claimed that she was pleased to be an Electrical Engineering student at Udinus as she could express and develop her creativity to its fullest. Additionally, her creativity could produce creations utilized by many people such as the water quality monitoring system. She said that being able to help others with her creation was a pride on its own.

The lecturers were supportive in developing my inner potential. As for my favorite courses, that is regarding renewable energies as I could learn to create a solar panel for a new energy source,” she said.

Sofiati, a former treasurer of the Electrical Engineering Student Association (HMTE), also obtained much knowledge through student organizations including, public speaking, time management, and leadership skills.

“Not only did I learn hard skills in classrooms, but I also learned soft skills in student organizations, mainly about financial issues,” she concluded. (Humas Udinus/Haris. Foto: Dok. Pribadi)
