Students at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) won a gold medal in the branch of Journalistic Photography. Gabriel Tyas Yudistira Darmesta, a Bachelor of Communication Design (DKV) student, won a gold medal in the Artistic Photography branch at the Regional Student Art Week (RSAW) on Thursday (06/27/2024).

The competition is an art event in Central Java to popularize a photography contest. The gold medal that he earned is one of the evidence of the high competence of Udinus students in arts activities. The competition chose ‘Freedom to Create and Inspire' as the theme. The race process was opened in a ceremony at the E building on the 3rd floor of the Udinus Campus. Then, the event was continued by taking pictures around the Old City of Semarang.

Gabriel gave his familiar greeting, carrying the concept of a group of young people who were playing various musical instruments. According to him, he took that concept because it was following the theme of the event, which is "The freedom of innovating through favorite musical instruments."

“For the artistic photography category, each participant took more than 1 photo. I took 3 photos and combined them into 1 using the multiple exposure technique," said the 2022 class student.

During the shooting process, Gabriel admitted that he was facing several obstacles. Oftentimes, some people didn't want to be photographed. Not only that, he also clashed with other participants who were looking for the same idea. But eventually, he overcame those problems and brought him a gold medal.

“I finally had to find a secret spot from the other participants, all the way to the inner Old Town on Garuda Street. I have also prepared myself for Peksiminas (another art competition) by looking for potential photo spots. I have learned more about artistic photography techniques in addition to multiple exposures," added Gabriel

Preparation for Peksiminas 2024

In response to this, the Vice-Chancellor III for Student Affairs of Udinus, Dr. Kusni Ingsih, M.M., also greatly appreciated Gabriel. According to her, this achievement is an important motivation for Udinus students to represent Central Java in Peksiminas 2024 later.

“For the photography category at Peksimida, Udinus was appointed as the host. Not long ago, the opening ceremony was held and it was attended by all participants. Now the winner has been announced and we are proud that Udinus can represent Central Java," she explained.

As information on other categories, namely journalistic photography, the two champions will later represent Central Java in Peksiminas 2024. The event was a competition in the field of art for Indonesian students. Organized by the Directorate General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud).
