A team of researchers known as the Indonesian Tobacco Control Research Network (ITCRN) 2024 from the Health Science Faculty (FKes) at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) held a research dissemination. On that occasion, they conducted the presentation before stakeholders, faculty members, and students. The dissemination took place in the theater room on the sixth floor of the I building at Udinus on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.

The event was opened with a speech delivered by the Head of the Public Health Department at Udinus, Dr. Eti Rimawati, S.K.M., M.Kes. Ia menyebutkan bahwa ITCRN merupakan hibah penelitian yang didukung oleh Pusat Ekonomi dan Bisnis Syariah Universitas Indonesia serta Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

“These two are institutions with attention to tobacco control. Hopefully, the research could produce a policy brief to reinforce stricter tobacco control in Central Java, allowing us to make a healthier environment for the public,” she uttered.

Survey Dissemination

The dissemination was attended by 100 participants. The discussion was fairly interactive with Aprianti, S.K.M., M.Kes., serving as the moderator who summarized insight and perspectives presented by the speakers.

There were three speakers at the dissemination. The first session was presented by the head researcher, Izzatul Alifah Sifai, S.K.M., M.P.H., who shared public opinion concerning the restriction of tobacco advertisement in Central Java.

She revealed that there had been strategies applied for this research to reach stakeholders and the public. These strategies included scientific publications, online media, and policy advocation by reviewing the No-Smoking Zone Local Regulation.

“These are strategic ways to push a stricter regulation about the restriction of outdoor smoking around an educational institution. In addition, an advocation strategy using policy brief is an effective approach to give an evidence-based recommendation to our policymakers,” she explained.

Izzatul further emphasized that the team had conducted an audience with the Head of the E Commission of the Regional Council of Central Java, dr. Messy Widiastuti, M.A.R.S. The audience was conducted before the dissemination, and it mainly discussed the public opinion survey.

“One thing we can do is to teach the prominence of problems surrounding tobacco to youths, particularly through social media. We would also like to evaluate local regulations concerning the No-Smoking Zone to support the Youth-Friendly Town Campaign. This is because there had been many tobacco advertisements within the public reach, particularly youths,” he revealed.

Creating Youth-Friendly Towns

(Humas Udinus/Ika. Foto: Humas FKes Udinus)
