Evi Yuli Ana showcased her ability as a chess athlete bearing the Women National Master (WNM) title. Evi, an Undergraduate English Language student at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) had been collecting dozens of medals since her elementary days.
Evi’s father, a national chess master, often encouraged Evi to visit chess clubs during her childhood. Almost every day, Evi paid attention to chess competitions which ignited her interest in chess.
“Not only was I encouraged to go to chess clubs, but I also was routinely trained by my late father. To this day, I still remember my first official match taking place in Semarang in 2012,” uttered the owner of the @itseviyuliana Instagram account.
Evi’s interest in the chess sports branch began to spark as she participated in many competitions. Evi, born on July 18th, 2002 in Sukoharjo, claimed that it was uncommon for women to be chess athletes. However, the fact that women chess athletes were still rare made the competition not as tight as that of men athletes. Evi won the Women National Master title back in 2021 after competing in the PON XX in Papua.
“I am very proud of this accomplishment; the Women National Master title serves as proof that I could induce pride inside my supportive parents’ hearts. Hopefully, in the near future, I could make Indonesia and Udinus proud,” Evi emphasized.
She had gathered many accomplishments as a chess athlete including three gold medals and a silver medal in the 2013 National Student Sports Olympics in Balikpapan, a silver medal in the 2016 women’s U-15 National Chess Championship in Depok, and a silver medal in the 2021 women’s U-19 National Chess Championship in Bangka Belitung.
Evi had been through a lot. She claimed that upon her father’s death, no one was willing to train her. Nevertheless, Evi’s presence in the Chess Community at Udinus helped her to be accomplished. She said that the Chess Community at Udinus was very active and the support Udinus provided was not only effective toward the athletes but also toward other students as well.
