Creative thinking skills and proficiency in using equipment are required to produce a movie. Any professional filmmaker must understand and hold these particular abilities. In an attempt to give students these abilities, the Film and Television Department at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro, (Udinus) hosted the Film Production Equipment Dissemination Workshop.

The workshop was attended by hundreds of Film and Television students, with the auditorium located on the seventh floor of the H building at Udinus being the main venue. On that occasion, students were given learning materials concerning production values and the flow of film production. It was presented by Tunggul Banjaransari, S.Sos., M.Sn., (a faculty member in the Film and Television Department).

During the presentation, Tunggil mentioned the problems normally faced by students, including having an excellent idea with limited production value. For that reason, it is important for students to fully grasp the concept of technical production value.

Technical production value can be divided into three. First, value for creative possessed by the director. Second, the value for film held by the producer. Third, value for technical owned by the Director of Photography, Gaffer, Art Director, Sound, and Editor, Tunggil highlighted.

At the workshop, students were also introduced to new equipment at the Film and Television Department, allowing them to improve their production skills. Through this equipment, students are expected to perfect their final assignments.

Brand-new Equipment

The equipment was primarily aimed to respond to the need of technical aspects of the visual division. Jovan Ardiansyah Dwi Pradana, S.Tr., Sn., a faculty member, mentioned that the lighting equipment was the most important tool among others, which consisted of lighting and lighting support grip.

The lighting equipment also came with several extensions, including Aputure 300d, Amaran 300x, and Amaran 60c. As for the supporting lighting, Udinus also provided numerous ones, encompassing Cutterlight, Floppy, Cardelini, and Applebox. In addition, there were also camera accessories, namely, Nucleus N and Follow Focus Wireless.

“Prior to this, we only had a manual follow focus attached to the camera, which was not flexible and efficient to the slightest. Fortunately, we now have a wireless follow focus, allowing shooting to be more practical as it is no longer required to attach the focus to the camera,” he explained.

Moreover, there were also other accessories added to the collection, such as Hollyland Wireless Video Transmitter, the Feelworld Monitor, Vmount Batteries, and high-capacity external batteries. According to Jovan, the equipment could heavily help the director during the shooting process.

On that occasion, students were also trained on how to use this new equipment as a way to improve their filmmaking competence for their future projects. Muhammad Mika Elindra (a Film and Television student of the 2021 cohort) said that the event could hopefully help students before embarking on their careers in the professional industry.

“Hopefully, we can be prepared for our upcoming career through this equipment. We expect this equipment to push our limit past the boundaries of stagnation, allowing us to be more capable of catching up with the current rapid era of advancements by the time we incite our careers in the industry,” he concluded.
