The development of the animation sector in Indonesia has seen a major improvement and garnered a whole new audience over the past several years. One of the main factors for this phenomenon to occur is talented animators, which allow their creative works to gain the attention of many animators across the globe.

Currently, Semarang even has several animated works contending with other prominent works created by international studios, one of which is ‘Si Warik.’ This animated work is an intellectual property owned by students and faculty members at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro, (Udinus). This animated show has garnered remarkable appreciation from both domestic and international institutions.

The appreciation received by ‘Si Warik’ is a byproduct of the astounding visual quality and effects, which added a whole new crucial element to the narrative. In addition, this animated work is also able to deliver a more in-depth experience. Dr. Khafiizh Hastuti, M.Kom., the Department Head of the Animation Program at Udinus and the initiator of this project, shared several tips and tricks to create astonishing visual effects.

According to Dr. Khafiizh, it was important to have a deep understanding of the basic principles of animating before creating complex visual effects. These basic principles consist of the understanding of timing, spacing, arcs, anticipation, and exaggeration. By grasping these concepts, one will be able to create more realistic and dynamic visual effects.

“It is also important to dive into 3D animation technology, which offers various kinds of tools and techniques to create wonderful visual effects. One can also experiment with several techniques, including particles, simulation, facts, lighting, and shading,” she explained.

In addition, reference is also one of the main keys to creating authentic and realistic visual effects, particularly when producing visual effects such as explosions, flames, and water. To produce these visual effects, one can use visual and audio references as a guidebook. Furthermore, Dr. Khafiizh also said not to be hesitant to think outside the box and add a creative touch. These two things will eventually shape the visual effects to be more interesting and unique.

“We should also pay attention to the detail to create remarkable visual effects and do not forget about sound as it is a crucial element in creating effective visual effects. Last but not least, we should not also be afraid to experiment, neither should we be hesitant to try new things that are unheard of,” she concluded. (Humas Udinus/Alex. Foto: Humas Udinus)
