Featuring an American professor, the Communication Science Department at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) discussed the ethics of online journalism. The discussion featured Prof. Vandana Pednekar-Magaf, a Professor School of Communication at Grand Valley State University.
Visiting professor class tersebut mengusung tema ‘Ethics in Online Journalism’, diikuti secara terbatas oleh 20 mahasiswa dari Prodi S-1 Ilkom Udinus di gedung E lantai 2. Sisanya diikuti oleh ratusan mahasiswa lainnya yang mengikuti secara daring lewat channel youtube resmi TVKU, pada Jumat, 30 September 2022.
At the discussion, Prof. Vandana taught students about the ethics an online journalist must have. Those ethics include accurate and factual news without any intention to harm other parties. Additionally, journalists must also respect the reputation and privacy of news sources.
“Penerapan etika dalam berita harus relevan dan transparan, dan itu berlaku untuk semua sudut pandang berita. Ketika semua sudah diterapkan, maka kerugian yang tidak diinginkan dapat terminimalisir,” jelasnya.
On that occasion, Dr. Rahmawati Zulfiningrum, S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom., the Head of the Communication Science Department, was present and gave an opening speech. During her speech, Dr. Rahmawati explained that this visiting professor class or discussion had been a routine agenda for the Communication Science Department, particularly by featuring an international communication science professor. Furthermore, she added that a journalist must understand full well the ethical codes of revealing facts to the general public.
“Dengan mendatangkan narasumber dari luar negeri kami berharap mahasiswa dapat menangkat wawasan yang lebih luas, bisa melihat perbedaan pemikiran dari berbagai negara,” harapnya.
