The utilization of big data is essential to garner information with a massive data volume. In an attempt to educate the utilization of big data, the Center of Excellence (CoE) at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) held a seminar entitiled ‘Everything is Data.’

At the seminar, the participants learned the basic introduction to Big Data, Data Science, and Artificial Intelligence. With 78 lecturers attending, the seminar took place both offline and online in the conference room on the first floor of the H building and the Zoom platform on Friday, January 25th, 2024.

The seminar was opened by Dr. Eng Yuliman Purwanto, M. Eng. (the Head of the Research and Community Service Institution at Udinus). On that occasion, he explained that Big Data in an organization could give information to its owner, including market trends, customer behavior, and data-based decision making.

“This information will later benefit our faculty members in conducting research, as stated in the Tri Dharma Philosophy. With Data Science, Internet of Things, and Blockchain as the main topics, participants are expected to earn new insight,” he uttered.

“We featured speakers from the Center of Excellence at Udinus to discuss various learning materials relating to Big Data. It encompassed Data Science, Internet of Things (IoT), and Blockchain with a case study in the Onion Supply Chain,” uttered Dr. Yuliman.

The topic was mainly discussed by Prof. Zainal A. Hasibuan, Ph.D. (the Head of the Center of Excellence at Udinus) alongside other three members of the CoE, including Firman Wahyudi S.Kom, Hasan Aminda Syafrudinm, S.Kom, and Ivan Muhammad Reza, S.Kom. On that occasion, Firman Wahyudi S.Kom discussed the Implementation of the Onion Big Data and Data Science. While Hasan Aminda Syafrudin, S.Kom discussed the Introduction to Blockchain Technology on the Onion Supply Chain Management Case Study.

Big Data

During his presentation, Prof, Zainal A, Hasibuan, Ph.D. explained that every aspect in life, such as information, events, and objects comprised of data. These data could be measured, processed, and analyzed to produce further information and insight.

“This information can serve as a tool to analyze and make decisions. There are, however, several kinds of data that can be measured, namely, numbers, texts, images, sounds, sensors, and the Internet of Things (IoT),” he explained.

Meanwhile, Big Data refers to a large-scale volume compiled by also a large-scale organization. In addition to the volume, Big Data also refers to various characteristics, encompassing data processing speed, data diversity, and data complexity.

“To process the data, we must involve the utilization of various tools, including Hadoop, Apache Spark, NoSQL databases, machine learning, and advanced data analysis. This comprehension can be implemented on research concerning with industries, particularly financial, healthcare, marketing, and e-commerce,” he explained.

Through this seminar, faculty members could gather insight to make decision based on data and complex problem-solving with the aim to assist large-scale research. In addition, it was also exemplified by a case study of the Onion Supply Chain, model development, and the onion value chain system commodity. (Humas Udinus/Haris. Foto: Dok. CoE Udinus)
