Four animated shorts made by students of Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) were successfully curated and will be screened at The 5th CRAFT Animfest International Film Festival 2025. The animated shorts were products of collaboration between students and lecturers and students from the Applied Animation Department at Udinus by using a traditional technique, namely, stop motion.

CRAFT Animfest itself is the first animation film festival in Asia that specifically celebrates traditional techniques in animating. In addition to stop motion, there were also other techniques, like classic painting or drawing, and sand animation. The animated shorts will be screened from October 28 to November 1, 2025, in Yogyakarta to commemorate Global Animation Day.

The curated animated shorts involved more than seven students in the making. Three of these shorts belonged to the Indonesian Animation Panorama Category for Students. These shorts encompass Babi Ngepot directed by Ria Ajeng Kartini, Alas Roban directed by Diajeng Lintang Sukmaningtyas, and Melawan Laut directed by Livia Marta Dewi. The fourth one belonged to the Indonesian Animation Panorama Category for Children, entitled Friends Trail directed by Mafazal Millah.

n response to this achievement, the Head of the Animation Department at Udinus, Dr. Khafiizh Hastuti, M.Kom., expressed her pride. This is because Udinus’ name can finally be established among other SEA countries in the film festival, which explores the art of animation while putting an emphasis on craftsmanship.

“Students had been working on these shorts from January to March, competing with 42 other countries around the globe. This accomplishment is a manifestation of our academic quality, as our students could compete on the international level,” she highlighted.

Support from the Department

This accomplishment is also credited to the lecturers of the animation department who keep instructing and nurturing their students. These lecturers were Nita Virena Nathaniam B.Des. (Hons)., MBA, who worked as a producer of the stop motion; Deddy Award Widya Laksana, S.Pd., M.Pd., as a sculptor; Andi Danang Krismawan, S.Kom., M.Kom., as a person in charge of visual effects; Ristia Kadiasti, S.Sn., M.Sn., as an illustrator; and Nur Rokhman, S.Sn., M.Kom., as a supervisor of the rigging animation.

“The creation of these animated shorts was fully supported by the animation lab at Udinus. This facility offers a positive atmosphere for students to earn accomplishments,” Khafiizh concluded. (Humas Udinus/Penulis: Haris. Foto: Dok. Animasi Udinus)
