Through her fondness for drawing ‘ulur’ motifs on paper, Jihan Farida, an Undergraduate Public Health Student at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus), established an art business named ‘Henna Art’ with millions in monthly turnover.

Jihan intended to merely develop her hobby, but then she saw the opportunity to make an income out of those arts in 2016. “The opportunity emerged as a result of my friends and family not having the same kind of business; to this day, my monthly turnover ranges from Rp. 1.500.000,00 to Rp. 2.000.000,00,” she explained.

Jihan explained that henna was a form of Middle-East and Indian body painting using specific paste. She also added that she ran this business at home and used safe pasta substances. “To market my henna service, I normally utilize my Instagram account named @jihanhenna_, which is an account dedicated to uploading my henna paintings for every part of the body,” she explained.

Whenever she receives an order, Jihan usually takes roughly two hours to paint depending on the designs and difficulties. Moreover, to get the best results, she also needs to adapt to her clients’ skin color. “My biggest obstacle is that the henna treatments will differ for every type of skin and to overcome this problem, I commonly consult my client beforehand,” she explained.

Jihan has her own way of allocating her time for working and campus activities by working on her henna services at night or in the afternoon upon attending lectures. “I have little to no difficulty in managing my time as henna businesses in general are flexible,” Jihan concluded.
