Reinaldy Atmanegara, a Communication Science Student at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus), triumphantly claimed a silver medal at the 2019 Sea Games of the Taekwondo sports branch.

Rei, born on April 20, 1995, managed to make a name for Indonesia and Udinus through his skill in defeating his opponents at that biannual event. His achievement in the kyorugi 54kg class brought Indonesia to be one of the top 4 at that event. Rei said that the preparations were not easy as he had been training hard since early 2018 for the sole purpose of this huge event. Despite not being able to obtain the gold medal, Rei was grateful for that accomplishment of his.

“Competing against ten different countries is not an easy task. However, the support given by the campus and country was able to lure me to showcase my best performance. From now on, I will keep honing my physical technique,” he uttered through the telephone.

He revealed that his talent as a Taekwondo athlete did not come on its own. Instead, it took hard work and routine daily training to finally achieve it. Currently, he is aiming to be accomplished at the next big event, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “I have always been hyperactive since childhood because I was fond of films that have martial arts elements in them. As a result, I became interested in Taekwondo, which impacts me to this very day,” Rei revealed.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Ir. Edi Noersasongko, M.Kom, the Chancellor of Udinus, expressed his pride in Rei for managing to be internationally accomplished. The Chancellor will also fully support every event participated by the students of this campus. “We are proud of Reinaldy’s accomplishment. Moreover, he is one of our freshmen, who enrolled through the achievement path. That path serves as our contribution in facilitating athletes for the sake of our nation’s educational advancements,” the Chancellor concluded.

Giving Motivation

“Do not ever give up and keep practicing. If you fall or fail at a competition, keep your chin up and improve those skills,” Rei emphasized.

In his young age, Rei is able to showcase various accomplishments. His fondness for Taekwondo led him to win both national and international competitions, including Sea Games Malaysia and Singapore several years prior. In July, Rei managed to be in the global top 4 at the 2019 Chuncheon Korea Open International Taekwondo Championship. “Wishfully, I could keep being accomplished and making a name for Indonesia, as well as Udinus,” he added.

At the 2019 SEA Games, the Taekwondo athletes were expected to gather two gold medals, but only two silvers and eight bronzes were realized. SEA Games is a sports festival participated by countries scattered around Southeast Asia held every two years. At the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines, dozens of sports branches were at the event with 72 gold medals, 84 silver medals, and 111 bronze medals in Indonesia’s possession. (Humas Udinus/Alex.
