Having a hobby as a source of income is the dream of everybody living on earth, particularly those who are still undergoing their studies. Sahmafella Rizkiana (19), a Communication Science student at Udinus, is one of those individuals. Through her singing hobby, she could earn a living on her own.

Her singing hobby started back when she was a two-grader. Her first song was a song entitled ‘Bunda’ popularized by a singer known as Melly Goeslaw. “When I was but a two-grader, my mom pushed me to participate in a singing contest, and eventually, I got first place. From there, I constantly competed in singing competitions all the way to the sixth grade,” Sahma uttered.

Sahma once stopped singing by the time she was in middle school. However, not long after she formed a band and was featured in several events at her school. In high school, she did not participate in any competition, nor was she invited to perform in her school. Rather, she only did cover songs uploaded on her Instagram account @sahmafellariz.

These cover songs led her to be fortunate as her songs got many views and were popular enough to the point various local bands noticed her. “In high school, I tried to sing cover songs and upload them on Instagram. Then, one of my cover songs garnered tons of views , leading me to be offered to perform. Initially, I did not get any revenue, but as my career went on, I was able to gain Rp. 50,000, and that was the first time I gathered a living through my singing hobby,” Sahma uttered.

Sahma gladly claimed that it would be her pleasure to entertain people through her singing. Furthermore, it is amazing that what initially began as merely a hobby became a money-making career opportunity. “It may be tiresome, but I am satisfied to perform in front of the audience as they usually radiate some kind of energy when they sing along with me. It truly is wonderful to make a living through hobbies,” Sahma revealed.

Additionally, Sahma also gave several tips regarding being a musician, particularly a singer. “Obviously, practice makes perfect, but it would also be nice to watch live performances and make it as a reference. Also, it is important to be confident in singing in front of an audience by uploading your singing videos on social media, which could serve as a platform to express your talent. Thus, others could know our passions,” Sahma concluded.
