Chess athletes from Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus) keep tirelessly attaining achievements on the national level. Recently, three students from Udinus won first place at the 2022 Pemalang Group Chess Open Cup at the beginning of December.

Those three students were grouped into a team named “Udinus Biru Langit.” Those students were Mustofa Iqbal and Ahmad Riziq (Management Students), as well as Muslimah Nurul Aisyah (a Diploma of Informatics Student). They were able to defeat other 120 players grouped into 40 teams from many different cities in Indonesia.

Ahmad Riziq explained that three athletes from each group competed simultaneously against the opposing team. Each match was divided into two different phases, including fast 10-minute chess and 3-second increments. Furthermore, he revealed that it took trust for them to compete in the team competition. This is because all three players were obliged to contend against the opposing force, making them needing to focus on their rivals.

“We are glad and proud of ourselves for making a name for our campus by winning a national competition. Additionally, this competition can also serve as a stepping stone for me to compete in another international competition,” he said.

In response to this attainment, Surya Wahyu Putra, the Chairman of the Chess Unit at Udinus, expressed his pride to those talented chess players. According to him, participating in a national competition had always been an agenda for all chess athletes of Udinus. In addition to experience, athletes will also get scholarships by earning an accomplishment.

“Not only do we routinely train, but we also often compete in this kind of competition, as it can essentially serve as a way for us to hone our skills. To those interested in chess, do not be hesitant to showcase your latent talent and join us,” he encouraged. (Humas Udinus/Haris. Foto: Dok. UKM Catur Udinus)
