The Udinus Campus Chess Robot (Roca KU) showed its ability upon defeating a Chess Grand Master (GM), namely, Novendra Priasmoro, twice in a row. The chess match took place at the second exhibition of Rocaku on the third floor of the E building on Wednesday, December 12th, 2022.

On that occasion, the exhibition was opened by an initial movement taken by Dr. Guruh Fajar Shidik, S.Kom., M.Cs. (the Vice Chancellor II of General and Financial Affairs). Following that, the second movement was taken by Dr. Kusni Ingsih, M.M. (Vice Chancellor III of Student Affairs).

The head of the Chess Association of Central Java, represented by Lukas Edy Santoso, also made an appearance at the exhibition.

At the match, the chess robot won two times from Grandmaster Novendra, who claimed the global top 707th. His first loss against the chess robot pushed the grandmaster to challenge the robot once again using a different set of pawns.

The chess robot, developed by members of the Udinus Robotic Club (URC), has competed against chess players from various levels, namely, six national chess players, four chess players from Udinus, and a grandmaster.

Dr. Guruh Fajar Shidik S.Kom., M.Cs., the Vice Chancellor II of General and Financial Affairs, explained that Rocaku had indeed been implanted with an advanced type of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Currently, the chess robot is on par with global grandmasters. At the exhibition, the ability was tested directly by Grandmaster Novendra and several other chess players. Furthermore, Dr. Guruh revealed that the chess robot had been registered as one of the 24 HAKI Copyrights.

“This exhibition also serves as a way for us to further develop this cutting-edge chess robot by seeing its flaws. Through the research of this robot, we aim to get 50 HAKI Copyrights to be registered. Hopefully, this robot can someday be famous and compete internationally,” he revealed.

During his interview, Grandmaster Novendra gave an appreciation to Rocaku Gen 1.0 for being so brilliant. According to him, the chess robot could serve as a good practice tool for chess players. In addition, he also looked forward to having a match against the chess robot again in the future.

“The robot is indeed a formidable opponent, and it gave me a good match. Hopefully, this chess robot can be mass-produced and developed to a certain extent,” Novendra concluded. (Humas Udinus/ Alex. Foto: Alex)
